Nadia OULAHALRésumé: SCirde (Responsible Design of Safe and Circular Food Packaging
In the context of the transition to a circular economy, the SCirDe project is based on a strong principle:
Biodegradable food packaging should not be waste, but a resource capable of being reused, recycled, or repurposed in a closed loop.
SCirDe proposes an integrated approach combining food safety and material circularity, with a focus on biopolyesters for food packaging.
The project is part of a responsible innovation approach that reconciles: functional performance, consumer safety, suitability for end-of-life processing (reuse, recycling, composting, methanization), and regulatory compliance (food safety, standards).
Objectives
The ambition of the SCirDe project is to build a scientific and technical framework to guide the design of safe and circular packaging, based on the Safe & Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles.
The project aims to:
evaluate the suitability of materials for multiple recovery loops (reuse, recycling, biodegradation),
develop effective disinfection and decontamination strategies to ensure their safe reuse,
integrate multi-criteria into an AI-based decision support tool, and
validate the developed approaches through realistic case studies (B2B, B2C, institutional catering).
The project brings together 12 partners with complementary expertise covering the entire packaging lifecycle: biotechnology, materials and process science, knowledge engineering and artificial intelligence, processing and recovery technologies, economics, acceptability, and lifecycle analysis.
